Community-Wide Approach Can Help Protect Air Quality For All

Summer has arrived and ozone season is upon us. By mid-June, the Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency (Agency) had already issued three Air Quality Advisories, covering five days. An Air Quality Advisory is a public message that lets residents and businesses know that higher levels are air pollution are forecasted for the following day.

The Agency seeks to engage local governments, businesses, and schools to be community leaders for healthy air habits. We collaborate with these groups to develop specific air quality business plans. Air quality business plans outline the actions an organization will take on Air Quality Advisory days. For example, a large company’s air quality business plan might include these action steps:

  • Turn off unused office lights and equipment.

  • Encourage employees to carpool and/or take public transportation to and from work.

  • Install the Agency’s free “Idle Free Zone” signs at receiving docks and employee parking lots.

  • Limit mowing and the use of gas-powered lawn equipment.

Businesses, large and small, are encouraged to reach out to the Agency to learn how they can implement an air quality business plan with relative ease. Contact us at 513-946-7754 or joy.landry@hamilton-co.org.
